Gifted Students Program Information for Parents
2007-2008
Dear Parents/Guardians,
My name is Sharon Wright and I’d like to introduce myself to you as the Gifted Mentor for Esquire Hills. I am also the Teacher Librarian and the Building Technology Coordinator.
Your child is included on the list of students receiving gifted services this year. This means your child met the Central Kitsap criteria through achievement testing, cognitive testing and teacher/parent nominations to qualify for Central Kitsap’s gifted services.
The Esquire Hills students being served by this program are not any better or worse than other students, just different. Gifted kids think at a different level. They comprehend and see connections between things quickly. Learning often happens with the first lesson. There are other kinds of giftedness not assessed by this program, and therefore, students who are not identified. Gifts come in different forms. The CK program only identifies a particular academic population.
Students identified as gifted are encouraged to be an advocate for themselves. That means that they should seek out learnings that challenge their thinking. Parents are also encouraged to assist their child in finding learning at an appropriate level of challenge. For the most part, gifted services are provided in the classroom, and your child’s teacher will be writing a Highly Capable Student Plan {HCSP} based on his/her strengths and interests.
There are many opportunities for enrichment at Esquire Hills. Here are some that your child may find worthwhile. After you review and discuss these items, please complete the enclosed interest inventory & learning styles checklist. If you would work with your child on this, it will help your child’s teacher to better meet his or her needs. Please return it to me as soon as possible.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding gifted services, please contact me at 662-8620.
